However, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious health risks”.
