EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
